Description
Bass pickups are usually described with aggressive terms such as "amazing punch" and "thundering lows," but that's not the sound of vintage J Bass pickups. They're all about warmth, sustain, and a clean, singing tone. The Area J bridge and neck pickups capture all of those qualities. They're not loud, but they have a very focused attack, so they have power where it counts — at the center of the tone. The lows are very clear and clean, and the highs are both smooth and open-sounding. The magnet-pull has been reduced, and the included 4-conductor wiring allows both series and parallel humbucking modes.

I replaced the Fender Vintage Jazz Bass pickups in my Fender Jaguar bass with DiMarzio Area J pickups in an attempt to keep the Fender sound but eliminate the noise when playing just one pickup. I am very pleased with the Area J's; they sound VERY similar to the Fender Vintage pickups but with no noise! It's hard to describe sounds but the DiMarzios are a little smoother than the Fenders. I think this is because the Area J's use alnico 2 magnets instead of the alnico 5 the Fenders use. These pickups use alnico 2 magnets, not ceramic like the specs here show. The Area J's have raised pole pieces for the A and D strings and have excellent volume balance. The pole pieces are also grounded so there is no noise when fingers touch them. One of my favorite features of these pickups is that they allow access to the individual coils via the five wires (EA coil is Red+ Black-, DG coil is White+ Green-, and the pole piece ground is gray). I used two DPDT on-on-on switches to allow me to select series/single coil/parallel wiring on each pickup. I use the DG coil on the neck and the EA coil on the bridge for the single coil selections so I can get an inverted/expanded P-bass sound. When the coils are wired in series (the suggested method in the instructions) the pickup has more bass and midrange and less treble; when wired in parallel it has less bass and midrange and more treble. If you want to be able to switch between series and parallel wiring, use a DPDT on-on switch for each pickup and wire them like this: looking at the rear of the switch, left to right on the top row the lugs will be 1, 2, and 3 and the second row left to right will be 4, 5, and 6. Wire red to 4, white to 5, black to 6, green to 2, run a wire from 1 to 6, use lug 4 for the positive lead and lug 2 for the negative lead of the pickup. If the switch is to the left the pickup will be wired in series and if the switch is to the right it will be in parallel. Run the gray wire straight to the shielding ground.I replaced the pickups on my Ibanez PJ bass (GSR190) with Fender Vintage P-Bass pickups and a DiMarzio Area J bridge pickup. I wired the Area J for series/parallel and it blends very nicely with the P-Bass pickup.I highly recommend the Area J pickups: they are quiet, versatile, and sound like Fenders.
